About the Organization

The Ibsen Society of America (ISA) was founded in 1978 at the close of the Ibsen Sesquicentennial Symposium held in New York City to mark the 150th anniversary of Henrik Ibsen’s birth. Distinguished Ibsen translator and critic Rolf Fjelde, Professor of Literature at Pratt Institute and the chief organizer of the Symposium, was elected Founding President. In December, 1979, the ISA was certified as a non-profit corporation under the laws of the State of New York.

The purpose of the Ibsen Society of America, as set out in its Bylaws, is to foster through lectures, readings, performances, conferences, and publications an understanding of Ibsen's works as they are interpreted in texts and produced on stage and in film and other media. The Society is The Ibsen Society of America by virtue of its location and the citizenship of most of its members, but it is concerned with Ibsen activities throughout the world. Membership in The Ibsen Society of America is open to anyone with an interest in Ibsen.  Click here for information about membership.

Annual Publication:
The ISA publishes an annual journal, Ibsen News and Comment, distributed free to all members, which reports on Ibsen activities within the ISA and throughout the world. It reviews productions of Ibsen's plays and recent books and articles on Ibsen. Every issue features the only existing critical annotated bibliography of current articles on Ibsen.
